DOOM Eternal's enemies consist of a hierarchy. The combat of DOOM Eternal wouldn't be so dynamic without the enemy design trying to piss you off in all of the right ways. For the Super Heavies, I threw all of my grenades and went to town on them and then finished them off with a full auto shotgun for more shells. I have used combos to quickly wipe out heavies, whether it be Precision Bolt + Ballista + Precision Bolt to put them into a glory kill state or Grenade + Rocket Launcher + SSG + Full Auto to gain more shells. In a majority of fights, I have used the flame belch on multiple fodder enemies for more armor. The game wants to sweep you off with encointers. Every enemy, every arena, every placement will pressure you to use multiple strategies. Heck, even though I keep playing against Level 9 CPU's, I don't know what the hell I'm doing in Smash Bros yet it's one of my favorite series of games. It's not a bad thing, I like playing mindlessly in games like Borderlands and CoD, but I feel like 2016 was balanced too much in the player's favor. The most abused strat was spamming Super Shotgun and that's it. It made the challenge of 2016 feel absolutely broken. Large ammo capacity so you don't have to worry about switching weapons, runes that give you get out of jail free cards, overpowered weapons and techniques, wide arenas. It handed over the feeling of being the Doom Slayer, not made you want to earn that feeling. In DOOM 2016, you could go willy nilly with whatever. So no carrots and sticks, you need to git gud. The game wants you to hold yourself accountable for dying. You have to get in the groove with the game's combat loop if you want to get somewhere. Unlike DOOM 2016, DOOM Eternal is not a game for you to play mindlessly. DOOM Eternal is to DOOM 2 as DOOM 2016 was to DOOM 1 in terms of settings.ĭOOM Eternal's combat system is such a bold, innovative evolution of the FPS genre. The tone has been changed to be much lighter, more exaggerated to compliment the much faster pace of the action. We got glory kills like ripping out eyes, impaling them, Doom Hunters being chopped, impaling heads with their arms. We have Doomguy fuckin yeeting a damaged Samuel Hayden through a portal like he doesn't give a fuck. Doomguy now has a gaming PC in his fortress of doom along with an MS-DOS computer with fully playable. You shoot yourself out of a BFG 10,000, you shoot the BFG 10,000 into Mars. Instead of being more grounded and grittier, we're going to take some of the goofiness that was in 2016 and amp it up to 12. Snowy bases with mechanical architecture, cities ravaged with tentacles and alien-like structures, facilities with rain shimmering down, a war that happened long ago in Hell with a still mech stabbing through a Titan. Instead of the game taking place in the contained places like a UAC facility and Hell, every level is distinct with their own identity. Instead of leaning more into DOOM 3's atmosphere which 2016 did, they made a more arcadey, more videogamey look close to DOOM 1 & 2 which serves well due to function over form. Instead of a casual experience, id Software wanted to make the player even more engaged into the systems, offering more dynamic combat. Game director, Hugo Martin, says a bunch of times in interviews and livestreams with his community that the intent behind making DOOM Eternal was to give it its own identity as a DOOM game. Then played it on Ultra-Violence, loved it even more, and then played every bit of DOOM Eternal's content on Nightmare multiple times from here on out and never looked back and it became my favorite game. I bought the season pass and the Switch version.) I played it in Hurt Me Plenty, loved it. I got DOOM Eternal the day it came out through "immoral practices" from a friend. It was a ride watching that last minute of that trailer. The Only Thing They Fear is You was playing in the background, Doomguy has dashing, bouncing around, shooting traps, I was yelling, "DAAAAAAAAAMN!" at every moment after the song played. I wasn't all too hyped for the game up until the 2nd trailer was released. I've been playing more games on harder difficulties ever since and I feel like it's for the better. It's the game that really woke me up on having a growth mindset rather than a fixed one, making me want to push myself out of my comfort zone more than anything that I have experienced in my life. It was the game I could delve the deepest into its game design. With every playthrough of DOOM Eternal, I was left a changed man. I know DOOM Eternal better than any game. I know my shit about this game inside and out. Do you have any idea how many times I have played this game? There is no video game that I have replayed more than DOOM Eternal, period. Proceed with cautionĭOOM Eternal is my favorite video game of all time so I want to be as definitive as I can with this rereview because of how much I adore this game.
